Today, we’re going to look at Protective Eyewear in the workplace. Health and Safety laws are in place to make sure you are protected when you’re in the workplace. We have British Standards and European Standards to make sure the eyewear comply with the standards. Some of them differ, depending on the job you do, some safety spectacles will be more impact resistant or some designed to resist heat.
Your employer (or Health and Safety Officer) will identify and evaluate any risks in the workplace. You’ll then be asked to visit your local opticians (or Hawley Optical) for an up to date sight test and/or see a member of the team in regards to safety glasses. The safety glasses will always have a British Standards Kite Mark stamped and a certificate so you know they conform to that Kite Mark.
Do you work outside? Protecting your eyes from exposure to UV light is highly recommended, as well as if you work in a dusty environment. Photochromatic lenses will help to 1. protect your eyes from UV light and 2. make it more comfortable when working outdoors. If you’re working in an area that require more impact resistant lenses, it might be recommended to obtain your lenses in Trivex or Polycarbonate material. In addition, you might be working under artificial lights which can cause distracting glare. This is where an anti-reflection coating might be recommended for you to help reduce the reflections or the amount of light being reflected off the front surface of the lenses.

All safety glasses have side shields attached to the frame which can protect your eyes from any foreign objects. Never try to adjust your frame or repair them. Always return to your opticians and ask them for advice. As they are made under British Standards, there’s only so much we can do in practice. Ask a member of the team for more information.

Like to do the odd bit of DIY around the house? (Unless you’re being told by your other half that is). It’s always important to protect your eyes when conducting such tasks. There could be flying particles or dust in the air if you’re sanding, drilling or using any type of equipment. There’s the risk of spilling chemical liquids, and if you’ve accidentally spilled some into your eyes. it can have severe consequences. Did you know there are more accidents in the home than at work? The use of wrap around goggles can help reduce the risk, and they’re relatively cheap to buy. If you’re a glasses wearer, it might be useful to wear goggles that fit over the top of your glasses.
